Lancia will use the Geneva Show to guage public reaction to the concept and if favourable, plans are at an advanced planning stage for Zagato to put the car into production.

>>> 6th January 2003:  Lamborghini take the wraps of Murcielago Roadster as Detroit Motor Show opens

Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show, click here to enlargeNorth America's largest Motor Show opened in Detroit yesterday with Italian sportscar manufacturers well represented. Against a worldwide backdrop of falling cars sales and rising oil prices, the three prestige Italian marques, Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, are bucking the trend, offering upbeats displays as they target increased US sales.

The stars of these displays are two concepts, both destined for production: Maserati's widely trailed Kebang GT Wagon and Lamborghini's brand new Murcielago Roadster, seen for the first time when the covers came off yesterday. The open topped version version of the 6.2-litre V12 powered Murcielargo has been designed by Belgian Audi stylist Luc Donkerwolke who was responsible for the original Murcielago.

Lamborghini's owners Audi, have guided the project which is targeted at the US market. The inherent rigidity of the Murcielago has been retained and little performance is expected to be lost. The Roadster will still offer a top speed of 330km/h and a 0-100km/h dash in 3.8 seconds. The mildly revised engine boasts variable valve timing and a variable geometry air intake manifold. The Roadster will cost around €250,000 with Audi targeting sales of 300 units a year.

Visually the front screen and side windows are lower than the hard top Murcielargo, protective roll over hoops are built into the back of the seats and trimmed, while a new engine cover opens to reveal engine bay chassis strengthening arms. The whole car sits visibly lower.

>>> 5th January 2003:  Italdesign release technical specification and details of the Maserati Kubang GT Wagon

click here for further images and details of the Maserati Kubang GT WagonTechnical specification of the Maserati Kubang GT Wagon has emerged from the SUV's designer's, Italdesign. Based around the 2001 Buran MPV concept, the Kubang ( named after a Javan wind ) is a sporty GT with offroad pretentions. The Kubang is fitted with Maserati's new Ferrari-developed 390 bhp 4.2-litre V8 as used in the coupe and Spyder and offers four wheel drive along with a mechanical-hydraulic six-speed gearbox. A top speed of 158.5 km/h is estimated, while the 0-100 km/h dash will be covered in around 5.5 seconds.

The Kubang, almost 5 metres in length, has a centre of gravity 100mm lower than class rivals. The interior is claimed to be revolutionary and the standard specification 5 seat cabin can bolstered by an additional row of seats. The rear door is hinged high on the roof section, and with the lower part folding downwards, the 1,500 liter rear luggage space use can be maximised.

"I decided that there was still something that could be done with the SUV concept. To me, they tend to look more like off-roaders that have gradually been "civilized" rather than real automobiles. They've got a lot going for them, but for some reason they never seem to offer the kind of sublime driving pleasure and all-round, all-weather condition safety that are two givens of other modern cars. When Montezemolo talked to me about creating a whole new, ultra-versatile Maserati, I decided we should do something that really pushed the envelope. We'd do a whole new take on the genuine Maserati GT that would make it perfect for sporty and dynamic demanding drivers, and what we came up with was the GT Wagon concept. So that's how Kubang came to be. It all happened very fast. We didn't have to research or review our ideas and concepts. There were no set parameters we had to keep in mind either. With the Kubang, we stretched the concept of the automobile as far as our imaginations would let us, without losing anything that would be expected  from a thoroughbred GT.  I'm very happy with this design. As a constructor, Maserati has always had its finger on the pulse of what drivers right across the board want and that has often seen it marry seemingly diverse features in a single car: just think of the way it combined the elegance and sophistication of the Mistral and the 3500GT with obviously racing-inspired performance. And so I was thrilled that Maserati gave me the brief to open a whole new chapter in a cutting edge segment that has completely changed the face of our roads in the last few years."

>>> 5th January 2003:  Further impressions of Fiat's "New Large" emerge as project goes back to the drawing board

New images have emerged as the long awaited Fiat Croma replacement, code name "New Large" has been sent back to the drawing board. It is believed that Fiat/Lancia/LCV division boss Gianni Coda was extremely unhappy with almost all aspects of the cars design. Slated by those who have seen it as being even uglier in the flesh than impressions have conveyed, sources say the interior falls "woefully short of what is expected from a large executive saloon".

The project has been dropped back with a mid-2004 launch date now targeted to allow it to be integrated into the platform sharing program and for lessons to be drawn from the Lancia thesis, the group's first large Fiat/Lancia saloon for 17 years. Italdesign have recently assumed responsibility for the design, taking over from the Centro Style team.

>>> 4th January 2003:  Maserati upbeat as output rises by more than 60% and US penetration gains momentum

the Maserati Spyder has been well received in the US, click here to read the full statementMaserati delivered to customers more than 3,300 cars last year, a rise of over 60% on 2001, in a climate that has seen car manufacturer's struggle worldwide with a shriking marketplace. In an upbeat statement the marque confirms that construction of a second assembly line for the new Quattroporte 4-door saloon has now been completed and that capital expenditure in research and development for the period 2001-06 will be around €400 million, a figure that equates to 20% of turnover.

Ahead for the Detroit Motor Show, Maserati have revealed that since returning to the US market in April, they have sold over 900 cars ( 75% Spyder's, 25% Coupe's ), immediately establishing North America as their number one market ahead of Germany, the UK and Italy. After having establishing a New Jersey head office in 2001, they have now recruited 31 dealers ( 28 in the USA and 3 in Canada ). All represent Ferrari, but "air gap" requirements have seen the rolling out of dedicated showrooms and sales personnel.

>>> 4th January 2003:  Italian financier confirms interest in Fiat takeover

After feverent speculation that has seen Fiat shares climb 12% in two days, former Telecom Italia CEO, Roberto Colininno has confirmed in a statement released yesterday, that he would be making a "friendly" bid for the Fiat Group. The plan, revolving around an €8 billion injection raised through a mix of asset sales, the financier's own capital and a possible cash imput from GM, has a powerful ally in Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who has called for the intervention of Italian businessmen to bail out the company.

Colininno will have to win over the creditor banks who threw Fiat a €3 billion lifeline in the summer, and his plan to have them convert debt to shares is unlikely to be well received, along with his aim of allowing GM to escape the force purchase clause in exchange for a financial imput, an option the banks see as vital to repaying their investment. There is also widespread suspicion over his close ties with inverstment bank Mediobanca, who recently failed to oust Paolo Fresco from the Chairman's job.

The Agnelli's are believed to be lukewarm to the idea, not wishing to lose a grip on the company they have controlled for so long or see the group broken up in an asset sale. However with Colininno's track record at Telecom Italia, the Italian investment community is believed to be positive to the proposals, which will be officially presented to Fiat in the next few weeks.

>>> 3rd January 2003:  Maserati release first photos of Kubang GT Wagon ahead of Detroit launch

Maserati have released first images of the Kubang GT Wagon, a concept which paves the way for the the marque's entry into the Sports Utility market next year. It will make its public debut at next weeks North American Motor Show in Detroit.

The concept, is based around a heavily revised version of the Buran MPV which made its first public appearance at the beginning of 2001. Maserati's first SUV will then enter production in August 2004. The Kubang, has been styled by Italdesign, who created the original Buran, jointly with Frank Stevenson. Maserati have given little away apart to state that safety issues have been majored on while it features and all new vehicle.

Visually the Kubang draws on Coupe/Spider 'family' styling cues, including the large 'Trident' front grille and bonnet swages. The front screen appears to blend into the large glass sunroof, while the side rake gives hints of styling seen on the disguised Quattroporte prototypes.

The Kubang GT Wagon will be aimed at the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, both which have represented new directions for these presitige sporting marques and have been overwhelming sales successes. With long order books for these 'off-road' vehicles, Maserati feel they cannot afford not to be involved in this market segment. The Kubang, will use the new 4.2-litre V8 engine as used in the Maserati Spyder and Coupe.
